Instagrammable Fall Spots In and Around Washington, DC

Fall is a wonderful time of year in the Washington, DC area. When the weather gets crisp and cool, the trees turn spectacular colors and lend a special feel to photos. Since starting my photography journey a few years ago, it’s become my favorite time to get out and take photos.

Unfortunately, the fall season is fleeting in the DC area, so you have to be smart and strategic about what you do and see. Here’s my roundup of Instagram-famous fall scenes in and near Washington, DC and my tips for planning your visit.

1. Swann St. in Logan Circle

This street is beautiful year-round but during the fall it lights up as its gingko trees change from green to yellow. There are some wonderful homes on this street, including the blue one pictured below, decked out in colorful flowers and vines. The gingko trees start to change color a bit later in the fall season after most colors have faded. These were shot in early November I believe.

Address: Swann St. NW & 14th St. NW

2. The Wicked Witch of Old Town Alexandria

Ding dong the witch is dead! The homeowners at 107 Prince St. in Old Town Alexandria put out this hilarious display each year. I find driving the best way to get around Old Town, since there’s plenty of street parking - both free and paid. Look out for this display to show up on your Instagram feeds the last week of September.

3. Brockett's Row - Old Town Alexandria

Look no further than this row of beautiful federal-style homes for displays of fall gourds and mums. My favorite is 307 N. Washington Street, the home pictured below with the yellow door. Learn more about the home’s owner, it’s renovations and it’s history via this article in Alexandria Living Magazine.

4. Nalls Produce

Since 1961 Nalls has been family owned and operated and sources from multiple farms in the area. In September, this charming roadside produce store brings out all the stops for autumn. Taking photos in front of the charming pumpkin display is a fall tradition for many families. In addition to taking lots of photos, we love picking up fall goodies like apple and pumpkin butter, spice mixes, and of course, tons of gourds and mums when we visit.

5. Old Lucketts Store

Located in a historic building dating back to 1910, Old Lucketts Store is a unique antiques and decor store with items from over 35 dealers. You can find some fantastic furniture, gifts and home goods. They have fun seasonal events and displays like the one pictured below from last fall. This one is a bit of a hike from DC, but I highly recommend you gather a group of friends and make a fun day of it.
